History

History of the Anglican Church of Levin:
-
- In the early days,
Levin was a small settlement surrounded by dense bush. To this area came
a group of pioneers who cleared the land and established houses, shops,
schools, and churches. The history of St.Mary’s had its beginning in the
most humble way. Anglican Services were held in private homes and in
‘Punga Hall’ situated at Bartholomews timber mill at the northern end of
the settlement.
-
- In 1890 it was
decided to establish an Anglican Church in the settlement. Funds were
raised and a site was secured, cleared by voluntary labour, and made ready
for the builders. Plans were provided by the Diocesan Architects, Messrs
Clere and Clere, Wellington, and a contract was let to Mr. Speirs of
Foxton. The Church was built in 1896 and used for services in 1897. It
was dedicated on 20 April 1897 and consecrated on 16 April 1899 by Bishop
Wallis of Wellington. This Church served the needs of the Parish for
many years, but it became apparent in the 1920’s that a larger church
building was needed to accommodate the increase of parishioners.
-
- After almost 30
years of meetings and fund raising, plans were approved for the building
of the present St.Mary’s Church at a special meeting in December 1953.
- It was agreed to build
the new church on the same site and so the first St.Mary’s Church was
shifted across Manchester Street in April 1954. Tenders were called, and
in June 1954, Mr. Wilson, the Architect from Wellington recommended the
acceptance of the F.W.Woolletts (Levin) tender, and this was agreed by
Vestry.
- The first concrete was
poured in August 1954. The new St.Mary’s Church was dedicated on 15
December 1956 by the Archbishop and Primate of N.Z. the Most Rev.R.H.Owen.
On 8 September, 1960 the Church was consecrated as the ‘Church of St.Mary
the Virgin’ by the Right Rev.E.J.Rich, Bishop of Wellington.
- On 20 April 1997
the Parish of Levin celebrated 100 years of worship and fellowship.
-
- The Second
St.Mary’s Church:
-
- Special Stone Laying
Ceremony:
- At a special
service held on September 8 1954, two pieces of stone, one from
- St. Paul’s Cathedral,
London, and one from Christ Church Cathedral, Canterbury
- England, were placed
in the church wall nearest to Cambridge Street.
- His Excellency the
Governor General, Sir Willoughby Norrie laid the stone from St.Paul’s
Cathedral, and Archbishop, Most Reverend R.H.Owen laid the stone from
Christ Church Cathedral.
-
- November 23, 1955 was a
most eventful day in the construction of the new Church, for the last
batch of concrete was poured. This was to complete the cross 60 feet
above ground level. The final coat of plaster was applied to the cross
at the top of the tower, and with the consent and co-operation of the
contractors, the Vicar, Rev. E.K.Norman, carved deep into the cement on
the top of the cross the following -
- ‘Behold Heaven and the
Heaven of Heavens cannot contain thee; How much less this house which I
have built.’
- These words of Solomon
come from 2 Chronicles, Chapter 6, Verse 18.
-
- The Parish of Levin
also includes two rural Churches:
-
St John the Baptist Church, Ohau.
Designed by Frederick de J.Clere and built in 1901. It was dedicated in
1901, and consecrated on 29 March 1905 by Bishop Wallis, Bishop of
Wellington.
- A Centennial
Service was held on Sunday 3 April, 2005.
-
St. Aidan’s Church, Waitarere Beach.
After several years of Anglican Worship in the Surf and Life Saving Club
building and in St.Andrews Presbyterian Church Hall, a section was bought
and a prefabricated building was erected on the site. It was dedicated
on 14 December, 1963 by the Rt.Rev.H.W.Baines, Bishop of Wellington.
